Add even margins around a photo, or pad it out to a perfect square.

Give a photo room to breathe
Padding adds space around an image without cropping or scaling what is already there. It is the usual fix for two situations: a marketplace or profile slot that insists on a square, and a design where a photo runs right to the edge and needs a margin to sit properly on the page.
Square padding versus cropping
Cropping to a square throws away part of the picture. Padding to a square keeps all of it and fills the difference with a colour, which is why product photos on white backgrounds are almost always padded rather than cropped. If the background of your photo is not flat, a transparent PNG usually sits better on the destination page.
Frequently asked questions
Does padding reduce the quality?
No. Your original pixels are copied onto a larger canvas at their exact size — only the new surrounding area is generated.
Which background should I choose?
Match the page the image will sit on. White works for most marketplaces; transparent is safest when you do not control the destination, though it requires PNG or WebP output.
