What a duotone actually does

A duotone throws away the original colour entirely. Each pixel is reduced to its brightness, and that single value is then used to mix between two colours you choose — the darkest areas take the first, the brightest the second, everything in between is blended. Because the result depends only on light and shade, photographs with strong contrast work far better than flat ones.

Choosing the pair

The effect reads best when the two colours differ in brightness as well as in hue. A dark navy paired with a warm orange gives the familiar editorial look; two colours of similar lightness produce a muddy image because the tonal range collapses.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get the original colours back?

Not from the exported file — the colour information is discarded during the mapping. Keep your original and treat the duotone as a derivative.

Why does my photo look flat?

Duotone depends entirely on the tonal range. If the source is low in contrast there is little for the two colours to separate, so lift the contrast first with the colour adjustment tool.
