Background for non-square images

Generate a complete favicon set

A favicon is no longer a single 16-pixel square. Browsers ask for one size, Android home screens another, iOS wants a 180-pixel apple-touch-icon, and Google uses a square icon of at least 48 pixels beside mobile search results. This tool renders every one of those from a single source image and hands them back with the HTML you need to reference them.

Start from something square

A favicon is displayed as a square, so a wide photo will either be cropped or padded. Simple, high-contrast artwork works best: at 16 pixels there is room for a letter or a bold shape and nothing more. Detail that looks good at 512 disappears entirely at favicon size.

Frequently asked questions

Which sizes do I actually need?

For most sites: 32 and 16 in the .ico, a 180-pixel apple-touch-icon, and 192 and 512 PNGs for the web manifest. The pack contains all of them plus the markup to link them.

Is the .ico a real ICO file?

Yes. It is assembled as a genuine multi-resolution ICO containing 16, 32 and 48 pixel images, which is what older browsers and Windows expect.
