Build a palette from a photograph

Designers routinely take their colours from a photograph — a product shot, a landscape, a piece of packaging — because colours that already sit together in the real world tend to sit together on a page. This tool samples every pixel, groups them into the number of buckets you ask for, and returns the average colour of each group.

How the grouping works

Colours are quantised into a coarse cube and counted, then the most populated cells are returned in order of frequency. That is why the first swatch is usually the background: it covers the most pixels. If you want the accent colours instead, ask for more swatches and look further down the list.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the first colour usually the background?

Because the palette is ordered by how much of the image each colour occupies, and the background is nearly always the largest area. Increase the number of colours to reach the accents.

Can I copy a single colour?

Click any swatch to copy its HEX value on its own, or use the button to copy the whole palette at once.
