Censor part of a photo before sharing it
Pixelation replaces a region with large blocks of its own average colour, which destroys the detail while keeping the shape and tone of the picture recognisable. It is the usual way to hide a face, a car number plate, a house number or a name on a document before posting a photo publicly.
Use a large enough block
Light pixelation can sometimes be reversed, because a small block still carries information about what was underneath. If the point is privacy rather than style, use a block size big enough that the region becomes a handful of flat squares, and check the result at full resolution before you share it.
Frequently asked questions
Can pixelation be undone by someone else?
Coarse pixelation permanently discards the detail and cannot be recovered. Very fine pixelation over predictable content such as printed digits is weaker, so choose a larger block for anything sensitive.
Does the rest of the photo change?
No. Only the regions you draw are redrawn; every pixel outside them is copied through untouched at the original resolution.
