Sharpening cannot add detail — it adds contrast
It helps to know what is really happening. Sharpening finds edges — places where brightness changes quickly — and exaggerates the difference across them, making the dark side darker and the light side lighter. Your eye reads that added local contrast as crispness. No new detail is created, which is why a genuinely out-of-focus photo cannot be rescued.
Where it goes wrong
Push the strength too far and the exaggeration becomes visible as pale outlines around objects, usually called halos, along with amplified noise in flat areas such as skies. A photo that is already sharp needs very little. Compare against the original with the toggle before downloading.
Frequently asked questions
Can this fix a blurry photo?
No. If the detail was never captured, sharpening only amplifies what is there — usually noise. It works on photos that are slightly soft, not on ones that missed focus.
How much should I use?
Less than feels right at first glance. Sharpening looks stronger at full resolution than in a small preview, so check at 100% and back off if you can see outlines along the edges.
