Converting JPG to GIF is worth doing when you need what GIF offers: animation and very wide compatibility. JPG gives you small files and universal support, but its drawback is no transparency, and each save loses a little detail. GIF supports transparency, but converting from JPG cannot invent it: a solid background stays solid until you remove it yourself.
