Cut away the parts of a picture you do not want and keep what matters. Drag a box over the area to keep, or lock it to a ratio — square for a profile picture, 16:9 for a video thumbnail, 9:16 for a story — and move the box around until the subject sits where you want it. Cropping only removes pixels, so whatever stays inside the box keeps its original resolution exactly.

How it works

  1. Drop in your image and drag a selection box over the part you want to keep.
  2. Lock the ratio if the result has to fit a specific frame, or leave it free and crop by eye.
  3. Nudge the edges, or drag the whole box, until the framing is right.
  4. Download the cropped image at full quality.

Good to know

Cropping and resizing are often confused. Cropping changes what is in the frame and throws away everything outside it; resizing keeps the whole picture and changes how many pixels describe it. For a profile photo you usually want both, in that order: crop to a square around the face, then resize that square down to whatever the site asks for. Doing it the other way round means you resize pixels you are about to discard.

Frequently asked questions

Does cropping reduce image quality?

No. The pixels inside the selection are copied unchanged, so the kept area is pixel-for-pixel identical to the original.

How do I crop a photo into a square for a profile picture?

Lock the ratio to 1:1 and drag the square over the face, leaving a little space above the head. There is also a dedicated profile-picture page that starts with the square already locked.

Can I crop to a circle?

Yes, on the circle crop page. It produces a PNG with a transparent surround, which is what you need for an avatar that is not sitting on a white background.

What ratio should I use for Instagram?

Square 1:1 for a feed post, 4:5 for the taller portrait format, and 9:16 for stories and Reels.
