Recolour flat graphics reliably
This works by measuring how far each pixel sits from the colour you picked and replacing everything within the tolerance you set. That makes it well suited to logos, icons, diagrams and other flat artwork, where a region really is one colour. Photographs are harder: what looks like a single blue sky is thousands of slightly different blues.
Getting the tolerance right
Too low and you will see speckles of the old colour left behind along the edges, where anti-aliasing blended it into its neighbour. Too high and unrelated parts of the image change as well. Raise it until the speckles disappear, then stop.
Frequently asked questions
Why is there a faint outline of the old colour?
Edges are anti-aliased, so the pixels along them are a blend of two colours and fall outside a tight tolerance. Increase the tolerance a little to include them.
Can I replace a colour in a photograph?
Up to a point. A high tolerance will catch most of a broad area such as a sky, but it may also take colours you wanted to keep. Flat graphics give much cleaner results.
