Convert a photo to black and white. The conversion is weighted the way human vision is rather than by averaging the three channels equally: green contributes most to perceived brightness, red less, blue least. That is why a properly weighted conversion keeps a blue sky dark and foliage mid-toned, while a flat average washes both into the same murky grey.
How it works
- Drop in one image or a batch.
- Apply the grayscale conversion and check the preview.
- Adjust the contrast if the result looks flat — removing colour often removes the separation between areas that were distinguished by hue rather than brightness.
- Download the black-and-white image.
Good to know
Some photographs improve in black and white and some collapse. The ones that work have a strong range of brightness, clear shapes and interesting light. The ones that do not are usually those whose whole appeal was the colour: a red door in a grey street is the subject of the photograph, and in grayscale the door is simply another mid-grey rectangle. Worth checking the preview before committing, and worth keeping the colour original either way.
Frequently asked questions
Is grayscale the same as desaturating?
The end state is similar, but fully desaturating in some editors averages the channels equally and gives flatter results. A properly weighted conversion keeps the tonal relationships closer to how the scene actually looked.
Does black and white make the file smaller?
Usually somewhat, since there is no colour information left to store, though the saving is modest because brightness detail dominates the file size.
Can I convert a batch of photos at once?
Yes — drop them all in and the same conversion is applied to each, then returned as a ZIP.
